A Texas man who has been on death row for nearly 30 years after being convicted of the murder of his girlfriend and their two children has died of natural causes, a spokesman for the state prison system said on Thursday.

Henry "Hank" Skinner, 60, died Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Galveston, Texas, Department of Justice Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst said. In a statement, Skinner's lawyers said he died of complications following surgery to remove a brain tumor in December.

On September 13, Skinner was supposed to be put to death. Skinner was convicted of murdering the deaths on New Year's Eve 1993 of 40-year-old Twila Jean Busby and her sons, 22-year-old Elwin Calera and 20-year-old Randy Busby. They were found dead at his home in Pampa, northeast of Amarillo, West Texas.

 

According to the prosecution, Skinner fatally stabbed Twila Busby's mentally challenged children after killing her with an axe handle. Skinner has long maintained his innocence. He said that at the time of his death, he passed out on the sofa after a mixture of vodka and codeine. Skinner and his attorneys pointed to Twil Busby's late uncle, Robert Donnell, as a possible killer.

 

His attorneys issued a statement saying, "Mr. Skinner was still contesting his conviction at the time of his death, and we greatly regret that he died before the conclusion of the proceedings." Prosecutors said traces of traces were found in the blood from the bedroom where Randy Busby was found stabbed to death Skinner's DNA, and his DNA also matched the bloodstains throughout the house where the murders were committed.

 

Skinner appeared once within an hour of his execution in March 2010, before the U.S. Supreme Court granted him a stay so he could run DNA tests on unexamined items from the crime scene.
