Ron Smith Wiki Pedia - Biography
A Florida attorney who successfully fought state
helmet legislation was killed in a motorcycle accident without a helmet. Ron
Smith, 66, a seasoned lawyer, and his girlfriend Brenda Jeanan Volpe, 62, died
in a fatal motorcycle accident on August 20, when neither of them was wearing a
helmet. Apparently, the couple met through a group called the American Legion
in the Old Town.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Smith allegedly lost
control of his bike as it slowed down due to traffic jams while Smith and Volpe
rode to the funeral. When Smith began to slow down due to traffic on the 19th
North USA in Pinellas County, he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed
into the road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol accident report.

His bike turned inside out, turning clockwise, hitting
the left side and the wheel of the utility trailer. According to Steve Gaskins,
a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, no one has been charged in
connection with the collision. Both Smith and Volpe died of blunt head trauma,
according to Smith's autopsy report and Volpe's preliminary report from
Hillsborough Medical Examiner.
Eric Teoh, a motorcycle safety researcher at the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, told the website: "It's very possible
that if they were wearing a helmet, they might have survived, but ... we can't
say for sure." Teoh noticed that the helmets definitely increased his
chances. Ron Smith, a lawyer and avid motorcyclist from Pinellas County,
Florida, has struggled with helmet laws for nearly a decade.
Eventually, state law changed. In 2000, Florida
amended its law stating that anyone 21 years of age or older no longer needs to
wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle if they have more than $ 10,000 of
accident insurance. Ron was also a member of American Bikers Aimed Toward
Education, a support group that lobbied against helmet laws.
He has practiced the law and defended those accused of
violating Florida motorcycle safety laws in proceedings that experts believe
may have helped to waive state helmets. Smith is remembered by his friends and
colleagues as a person who appreciated his individuality and the individuality
of others. Dave Newman, who was a member of the American Legion Riders along
with Smith, commented that Smith believed that everyone should have their own
choice.
"He believed that everyone should have their own
choice," he commented. Gary Pruss, another friend of Ron, argued that Ron
was also known for his good judgment. "He was the guy you went to for
advice," said Pruss. On the homage website, Volpe was also described as
"a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and friend, a truly beautiful person".
