An Anchorage woman charged with murder in 2019 pleaded guilty after being caught in what prosecutors described as "catfishing." Denali Brehmer was 18 when she and two teenage classmates were conned by a stranger from out of state who offered them millions of dollars to kill and sexually attack Cynthia Hoffman, 19, they fell for his scam.
That's according to indictment documents filed in state and federal court, which say that Darin Schilmiller, then 21, from Indiana, posed as an internet millionaire and convinced Brehmer to send him photos and videos of the abuse of infantile sexuality.

According to the prosecution, Schilmiller offered Brehmer and her group $9 million to kill someone in Alaska. The teens allegedly tied up Hoffman, who allegedly considered Brehmer his best friend, and fatally shot him near Thunderbird Falls north of Anchorage on June 2, 2019.
Brehmer, now 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Wednesday. Brehmer's sentencing is scheduled for August 22. Her plea of guilty does not involve an agreement on the length of her sentence, and the sentencing range for Hoffman's murder is 30 to 99 years in prison.
Schilmiller was arrested and extradited to Alaska, and the now 24-year-old remains in prison on murder charges in the case. This state case and a federal child pornography case in which Brehmer is also accused remain open. Charges against two of Brehmer's alleged accomplices in the murder, 23-year-old Caleb Leyland and 19-year-old Kayden McIntosh, are also pending.
