Two weeks before her son's alleged murder of a Queensland woman, a mother wrote "I love you so much" in a social media message celebrating her son's birthday. On February 22, Margz Smetheram posted on Facebook: "Happy birthday to our son Leo. We love you so much and hope you have an amazing day boy. Margz was found dead on March 9 in what police described as a "confrontation scene" at a mansion in Kallangur, north of Brisbane.

 

After a disagreement, the police were called to the flat. Leonard James Llewellyn Smetheram, her son Leo, age 36, was accused of killing her that evening. "The 56-year-old woman who was found dead was known to the man who is now in custody and they were relatives," Inspector Ben Fadian told reporters on March 9 before the charges were filed, according to 7News.“

There was no domestic violence order against the couple, but police had previously been to the address on other matters. A member of a society called triple-0, and detectives were knocking on doors and taking statements from neighbors.
