Candy Montgomery Wiki - Biography

On Friday, June 13, 1980, Candy Montgomery, a dedicated and selfless woman, caused a stir in her Dallas neighborhood when she was arrested for using an ax to kill her friend Betty Gore with 41 strokes. Candy claimed in court that she killed Betty in self-defense. The fact that Candy was exonerated after this defense strategy was admitted to evidence in court was particularly blatant.

Candy, a five-episode limited series starring Jessica Biel in the titular role, was the first to take up the challenge. HBO Max is now tackling this story with the crime drama Love & Death, which premieres on April 27 and stars Elizabeth Olsen.

Candace "Candy" Montgomery was accused of killing Betty Gore, her close friend, on June 13, 1980, in Wylie, Texas. Betty had just passed the Gore house to buy a swimsuit for their daughter when she confronted Montgomery about her adulterous relationship with Allan Gore. After the brawl, Montgomery allegedly stabbed Gore 41 times with a three-foot-long axe.

When Allan couldn't reach his wife while he was on business, he asked his neighbors to check on her whereabouts. They found Betty dead in the utility room and their baby girl Bethany crying in her crib. Gore eventually confessed to the police about his relationship with Candy after a week-long questioning.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram said Montgomery was arrested by police and released after posting $100,000 bail. The eight-day trial took place four months later, with the prosecution arguing that Montgomery was acting in self-defense after Gore confronted Candy with an ax he grabbed from the garage. Hypnosis treatment claims that Montgomery's "dissociative reaction" during the argument was due to childhood trauma.

Candy Montgomery was acquitted of all murder charges by a jury on October 29, 1980. Due to Candy Montogomery's trial, her husband Pat and their children moved from Texas to Georgia in 1980. Four years after their divorce, Candy returned to using her maiden name, Candace Wheeler. Newsweek (opens in a new tab) claims that she oddly changed her profession and became a mental health counselor.

Candy Montgomery is still alive and recently worked as a therapist in Georgia. She was born in November 1949 and is 72 years old. Jessica Biel reportedly tried to contact Candy in real life to get a feel for the role, but the actress told Entertainment Weekly that she was "not interested."

When Biel needed additional information, he went to Robert Udashen, one of Candy's homicide lawyers and "a huge source of information." Regarding her portrayal of the truthful Candy Montgomery, Biel told Variety, "I wanted to create this woman that you guys were really divided about. You're with her. I'm not sure if you're with her or I'm with her, so please wait. Olsen also wanted to delve into the mind of the character and the motivations behind such terrible acts.
