This week, a preliminary hearing in the case was held. According to testimony, the man is suspected of killing three relatives and a friend in Alabama after a dispute over some dirty dishes. Jared Tarrant Smith-Bracy, 21, is charged with manslaughter in the deaths of the defendant's brother Jeremy Smith, 27, his 70-year-old family friend Shelia Glover, and grandparents Leonard Smith and Barbara Smith, both in their 80s on February 22, 2023. In his bedroom, Leonard Smith was found dead after being hit with a pickaxe.
The three victims who died were attacked with a pickaxe and shot to death in the backyard of Melanie Loop's home in Lake Forest. The defendant was brought to court in handcuffs and a yellow jumpsuit for a preliminary hearing on Monday afternoon. If found guilty of the charges against him, he could face the death penalty. Daphne police say they received more than a dozen 911 calls reporting gunshots on the day of the tragic killing. Shortly after the killings, SWAT discovered the suspect hiding in the nearby woods.

The suspect was to notify a law enforcement officer. In her testimony at the trial, police Sergeant Daphne. Jason Vannoy said, "I had to get them before they got me." According to Vannoy, the statement was made after the suspect identified himself as one of the victims. Vannoy spoke at a press conference in February along with other law enforcement officials. The crime scene, in his words, was "terrifying" and "the worst I've seen, for sure in 22 years."
According to Vannoy in his interview, Smith-Bracy was "extremely cooperative and kind" but the suspect was "unrepentant. Given that the defendant pleaded not guilty by reason of a mental defect, it seems that the main legal issue in the future will revolve around the competence of the suspect.
Smith-Bracy's defense attorney Thomas Pilcher argued that his client's alleged behavior was "a break from his normal behavior", but the prosecution insisted that the suspect was "absolutely responsible for his criminal conduct" unless the case file "suggested that had any disease or mental defect." If a trial ever takes place, prosecutors have already stated in the record that it could take years.

The suspected murders, according to authorities, took place after Smith-Bracy was released on bail earlier in the day following a criminal incident at the residence. An unknown man drove the accused home from prison, not understanding what would happen next, according to WKRG.
After allegedly stealing a Glock legally owned by the driver, Smith-Bracy allegedly went on a murder spree with multiple weapons. Smith-Bracy is still being held without bail, according to Baldwin County Jail records. He has been in custody since his arrest on February 23 at 3:36 am.
