A Lithuanian resident is accused of killing his closest friend, but the jury could only reach a partial verdict, prompting a judge to declare an error in the trial. Prosecutors now have to decide whether to reopen the case. Several charges have been filed against 21-year-old Austin Ford in connection with the death of 18-year-old Tori Lang. The Gwinnett County jury issued a fairly favourable decision on Monday in the case.

The numbers 1 to 5 were considered an error by the court. The most serious charges included murder on this list. Ford was found guilty on points 6 to 8: two counts of theft by taking and concealing the death of another person. Had he been convicted of murder for shooting Lang in July 2021, he would have received a life sentence.

On Monday, after three days of deliberations, the jury declared a deadlock. The jury said they were "split in half" on the main charges of murder, aggravated assault and two armed possession charges on Friday, indicating they had trouble coming to a conclusion.

 

Due to the deadlock, Judge Deborah Fluke declared a failure in the trial. Before deciding whether to retry the murder case, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's office informs FOX 5 that they will be talking to Lang's family. Ford was mistakenly charged with murder, according to Ford's defence, because Lang chose to commit suicide.

 

Lang's cause of death - homicide or suicide - could not be determined by the medical examiner, but Gwinnett County prosecutors said it was more likely that Ford was pointing a 9mm handgun at Lang when the shot was fired. Lang studied architectural engineering after graduating with honours from Stephenson High School.

 

On the morning of July 28, her body was found in Yellow River Park in Gwinnett County. Authorities say Lang's burning car was abandoned in a nearby nature reserve. According to police, her 2012 light blue Nissan Versa was found in the Hidden Acres Nature Reserve in DeKalb County, about four miles from where Lang was shot.
