This week, a 10-year-old girl who spent a cold night alone in the deep woods of Washington State returned home safely. Shughla Mashwani of Federal Way, Washington, got lost while hiking and was found Monday on Cathedral Rock Trail near Cle Elum with minor scratches, according to KIRO 7.
According to authorities, members of the Shughli family had crossed a pedestrian bridge over the Cle Elum River about 90 miles southeast of Seattle when she "suddenly separated from them and was left alone" twenty-four hours earlier. She said she believed following the river was the right course, according to a statement from the sheriff's office. She became known as an extremely resourceful and strong 10-year-old child.

Shughla described KING 5's situation by saying, "She was thinking about going to sleep, waking up, and finding my mum and dad in the woods." I'm going to find my dad, she thought, and I'm going to keep walking in the woods to find him. Later, according to Shughla, she walked down the river and camped between two trees.
She claimed that she was afraid that when she first saw the paramedics the next morning, they were actually trying to hurt her. Shughla told KIRO 7, "I believe they are thieves and they are going to rob me." She finally agreed to go after they continued calling her by her name and showing pictures of her family.
Shughla is pictured with two lifeguards in an inflatable kayak in a photo of the unusual find. Another photo captures the touching moment she was able to embrace her father for the first time, in front of another beaming relative. "This is a total acknowledgment of the desire to keep this type of call as a lifesaver for as long as possible."
Kittitas County Sheriff's Inspector Chris Whittsett told KIRO 7, adding that the team is ready to learn that the youth either died of the cold or was carried away by the river. Teams from at least seven counties participated in the extensive search operation.
According to KING 5, Shughla and her family moved to the United States from Afghanistan two years ago. They explained to the sheriff that they went to the Cathedral Rock Trail area because it reminded them of their native people. When asked how she felt in the apartment she shares with her family, Shughla replied: "Very happy.
