Enrolled as a student at the esteemed Stella Adler Studio of Acting, she vanished without a trace in the month of February in the year 2018.
Her friends, who were apprehensive of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, requested a wellness check at her apartment by the Los Angeles Police Department a few days following her reported disappearance. On February 23, 2018, surveillance footage captured the 25-year-old actress leaving her dwelling with her partner Chris Spotz, who was betrothed to another woman, both of them donning baseball caps and carrying luggage into an elevator. This proved to be the last time she made contact with her friends via text message, despite being an avid user of the medium. Chris Spotz claimed that he dropped her off in the city of Santa Clarita, approximately 25 miles from her home, following a heated argument, and that this was the last time he saw her alive.
According to a statement made by LAPD Capt. William Hayes to The Denver Post, when investigators sought to verify Chris Spotz's account, they concluded that he was not being truthful. Homicide detectives took charge of the investigation, and traveled to Wheatland, California, to question the suspect's father regarding the whereabouts of their child. The detectives learned that Chris Spotz and his fiancé had journeyed to Colorado to visit his family's home on March 1, 2018.
Three weeks later, on March 22, 2018, Riverside County Sheriff's deputies spotted Chris Spotz driving his missing girlfriend's allegedly stolen Toyota Tacoma in the vicinity of Hesperia. He led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit that spanned 60 miles from Hesperia to Corona, before ultimately shooting and killing himself at the scene.
Acting on tips received, authorities found the remains of the 25-year-old actress buried in a shallow grave more than 400 miles from her apartment, near a swamp in an isolated Northern California wildlife area. She was identified by the tattoos on her body. A post-mortem examination revealed that she died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head. Chris Spotz's family consented to investigators accessing Adea Shabani's phone after her death, and her phone records indicated that she had arrived at her apartment at approximately 12:48 p.m. on the day of her disappearance. Additionally, her fingerprints were found in the Northern California region where her body was discovered.
