An English couple who fought to get their young son back from welfare and then beat him so severely that the 10-month-old died just over a month later was sentenced to life in prison for a murder on Friday in what a judge called a case of "unimaginable cruelty". When the verdict was delivered at Derby Crown Court, Stephen Boden, 30, and Shannon Marsden, 22, remained emotionless as family members sobbed and a sigh was heard in the gallery.
Finley Boden passed away on Christmas Day 2020. The judge remembered him as a beautiful, cheerful child who was always smiling. Based on the list of injuries he sustained, his final weeks were hell: 71 bruises, 57 broken bones, and burns to the hands, including one believed to be caused by a lighter. In a statement read aloud by prosecutor Mary Prior, a relative said they "conspired to inflict all the damage on him, hide him and let him die in such a horrible way."

"For what you've done, I can only call you monsters." According to court records, the boy was removed from a marijuana-smoking couple shortly after his birth in February 2020 because social workers believed he would suffer "significant harm" at their filthy Chesterfield home and Boden had a history of domestic abuse.
Bodenand Marsden asked the family court to return the baby, calling it "perfect" and a "cuddly chunky munchkin." The judge ruled that he could return first part-time and then full-time. There was a conflict between the guardian, who wanted an earlier transfer of custody to the parents, and the local social welfare authorities, who preferred longer transition periods.
The couple urged the court to return the boy quickly, and Boden assured her they were "working very hard to make the changes." According to Simon Kealey, Boden's attorney, there was no "sadistic motivation" behind the murder. According to Kealey, Finley's parents did not ask him to return in this case to commit the murder. "

"You both understood that Finley was very ill and dying," said Tipples. “However, you deliberately neglected to provide him with any medical attention and made sure he was hidden from anyone who might have saved him and removed him from custody.
