A 33-year-old mother from New Mexico has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly killing her 7-year-old daughter by stabbing her multiple times in her family home. Her mother, Maylene John, has now been charged with second-degree murder in the gruesome death of her baby girl, prosecutors have announced. The case falls under federal jurisdiction because John and her daughter were members of the Navajo Nation living in non-profit Navajo housing. In an interview with investigators, John's brother, K.J. He said that when he went to bed the night before, nothing seemed out of the ordinary between John and his daughter. However, just before 3am, he heard his niece calling for help from the room he shared with his mother. The door was locked so he kicked it open and said he found a girl bleeding from a stab wound to her torso. John was sitting on the edge of the bed with a silver folding knife in his hand. KJ provided Jane Doe with a blanket so she could apply pressure to the wound," the complaint reads. "Jane Doe told K.J. that John stabbed her. John put the knife to his own neck, then K.J. grabbed her wrist, forcing her to drop the gun. KJ dropped the knife on the floor in front of the bedroom door.
Seeing his young niece's injuries, John's brother ran out of the house to a neighbor's house and called for help. John's brother explained to police that his sister had a history of substance abuse, had attended rehab several times in the past, and had "social suicide for the last ten years". He said his sister was recovering from drug use in the days before her fatal stabbing, but noted that she and her daughter were "cooperating normally when he went to bed on the night of October 23, 2022."
The day after the stabbing, John allegedly informed detectives that he had been drinking vodka and taking methamphetamine during the day on October 23, but he couldn't remember much more. He said he remembers taking pictures of bloody hands, faces, clothes, and shoes during the arraignment but "can't remember how or why [his daughter] was in his room" the night before. However, John allegedly admitted that he remembered stabbing the girl and said that when he drove the knife into her daughter's torso, "she was immediately hurt because she caused pain to her daughter." ”, according to the statement. John allegedly said she "passed out" after being stabbed. John is currently being held in the San Juan County Adult Detention Center without bail. If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment.
