On February 6, 2023, a 76-year-old dog breeder, Lonnie Alford Ray, met a tragic end when he was fatally shot by a group of perpetrators while attempting to sell a French bulldog for $2,500. Following his death, his daughter Karen Hannah implored the culprits to surrender and make amends for their actions.

The tragedy took place in a KFC parking lot in Bishopville, South Carolina, where Ray had arrived with a dog for sale. Alas, the transaction took a horrific turn as one of the suspects brandished a firearm, stealing the dog and shooting Ray, leading to his death at South Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, South Carolina, after eight shots were fired during the robbery. Lonnie Alford Ray, a veteran of the Vietnam War and renowned French bulldog breeder, was mercilessly murdered while attempting to trade one of his prized canines for $2,500. The 76-year-old was shot and killed in a KFC parking lot in Bishopville, South Carolina, by a group of perpetrators who then fled with the bulldog. Ray was known to be "the best breeder in South Carolina" and had battled cancer before losing his life in a senseless act of violence.

French bulldogs have grown in popularity in recent years, taking the second spot on the list of the most favoured breeds in the United States as per the American Kennel Club. The breed is preceded by the Labrador Retriever and followed by German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and others in the top 10.

However, with their soaring popularity has come a rise in incidents of theft and violence, such as the grand theft charge faced by Earl Choi in California and the shooting of Lady Gaga's dog walker in 2021. One of the accused in the latter case pleaded no contest to an attempted murder charge. Ray's daughter, Karen Hannah, has called on her father's killers to surrender and face justice.
